MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- In a contest that featured a combined 17 runs and 23 hits, the Biscuits (64-52) survived multiple comebacks before beating the Birmingham Barons (55-60), 10-7. With the victory, Montgomery extended its North Division lead to 4.5 games.
Birmingham pelted Montgomery starting pitcher Sam McWilliams. The Barons jumped on the right-hander with three runs in the opening frame, including Alex Call's fifth Double-A home run.
The Biscuits came storming back in their half. Nick Solak spurred a two-out rally with a base knock, which was followed by a Mike Brosseau single. Dalton Kelly drove home the first Montgomery run, scoring Solak on an RBI-single. The hit parade continued with a two-run single from Jake Cronenworth and a go-ahead base knock by Biscuits newcomer Jesús Sánchez.
With Montgomery leading 4-3, Birmingham quickly recovered on Danny Mendick's 12th home run in the second inning. However, the Biscuits re-took the lead on a Brosseau two-run double in the bottom half.
Although the Barons knotted the score twice more -- once on an Alfredo González home run and again with Alex Call's second round-tripper of the night -- Brosseau's third hit of the evening and 10th home run of the season doomed Birmingham.
As the Biscuits led 10-7, thanks to the seventh-inning two-run blast in addition to an RBI-double by Nathan Lukes, Mike Broadway (1-1) kept Birmingham off the board before closer Yoel Espinal was called upon in the ninth. The Montgomery right-hander picked up his second save in 25 hours, setting down the heart of Birmingham's order to advance the Biscuits' winning streak to five games.
Montgomery continues a five-game homestand against Birmingham Friday on Local Legends Night, featuring MAX Fireworks, at 6:35 p.m. Blake Bivens (0-0) will start for the Biscuits while the Barons are projected to offer Dylan Cease (2-0).
The series also includes Wrestling Night with an appearance by WWE Hall-of-Famer Jeff Jarrett and MAX Fireworks on Saturday, August 11, and Bark in the Park and Kids Day, including a Kids Baseball Giveaway, on Sunday, August 12.
