KODAK, Ten. - Kris Bryant's return to Smokies Stadium proved to be too much for the Biscuits (47-41), who fell in game two of their four-game series against the Tennessee Smokies (48-40) on Monday night, 6-2.
Bryant, the 2016 National League MVP, who last played for the Smokies in 2014, was making a rehab assignment after a shoulder injury with the Chicago Cubs sidelined him, and he reached base in the bottom of the first on a throwing error by Biscuits third baseman Mike Brosseau, and then scored the game's first run on a Yasiel Balaguert RBI-single off Biscuit opener Brandon Lawson (2-1). Trent Giambrone followed that up with an RBI-single of his own in the next at-bat to put Tennessee ahead, 2-0.
In the third, Bryant made the sellout crowd of 7,613 erupt with an RBI-single into left to make it a 3-0 game. Vimael Machin then took Benton Moss over the left field wall to put the Smokies up 4-0 in the fourth.
The Biscuits had no answer for Tennessee starter Matt Swarmer (1-1), who chucked six scoreless innings of two-hit ball and carried a perfect game into the fifth before a two-out single by Brosseau spoiled the bid.
Bryant saved his best for his final at-bat of the night, clobbering a two-run home run over the left field wall in the seventh to put a cherry on top to his return to the 2016 World Series winner's favorite place to play in the minors. The Biscuits finally got on the board thanks to a David Rodríguez RBI-single in the eighth, and a Nathan Lukes RBI-fielder's choice in the ninth.
The Biscuits will try to bounce back on Tuesday morning when LHP Brock Burke makes his Double-A debut against RHP Thomas Hatch (6-4) at 11 AM CT.
Once the Biscuits conclude their current nine-game road trip, the team will return to Riverwalk Stadium to open up a five-game series with the Mississippi Braves on Wednesday, July 18 when there will be a Bucket Hat Giveaway. The series will also include Outdoors Night featuring a Hunter Camo T-Shirt Giveaway on Thursday, July 19, First Responders Night & MAX Fireworks on Friday, July 20, Millennial Night featuring a Participation Ribbon Giveaway & MAX Fireworks on Saturday, July 21, and then a Mascot Poster Giveaway on Sunday, July 22.
