JACKSON, Ten. - Brock Burke (4-1) tossed seven more shutout innings, and the Biscuits (67-53) continued to roll, taking the series opener against the Jackson Generals (63-56) by a score of 6-1 on Tuesday night at The Ballpark at Jackson. The Biscuits are now a Double-A best 40-21 on the road this season.
The 22-year-old lefty Burke, who was making just his sixth Double-A start, dominated the Generals all night long, surrendering just five hits-all singles-and two walks to go along with eight strikeouts in the win. He now has a season-best consecutive scoreless inning streak of 15.2.
Emilio Vargas (0-2) on the other side looked a formidable foe for Biscuits batters early on, as the righty retired the first seven players he faced. But Montgomery then got a couple of runners on in the third before Nathan Lukes stroked a two-out two-run double down the right field line to give the Butter and Blue the lead and the only two runs they would need on the night.
The next batter was Nick Solak, who pummeled an RBI-triple into right-center field of the cavernous ballpark. Then Mike Brosseau blasted a two-run homer over the left field wall to make it 5-0 in the third, in which the Biscuits brought nine batters to the plate.
In the sixth, Jake Cronenworth launched his fourth home run of the season, his first Double-A opposite-field job, which made it 6-0. All five of Cronenworth's Double-A home runs have occurred on the road.
Spencer Jones came on for Burke, and after throwing a scoreless eighth, allowed an unearned run in the ninth on a Cronenworth throwing error, but struck out Galli Cribbs Jr. to end the game and put the Biscuits up six games in the Second Half North Division with 20 to play in the regular season.
The Biscuits will resume a suspended game from August 1 on Wednesday at 4:05 PM CT when Dalton Moats (2-3) will pitch against Taylor Widener (5-5), and then Game 3 will follow approximately 30 minutes later with Sam McWilliams (4-6) dealing against Bo Takahashi (2-3).
The Biscuits return home on Sunday, August 19 for a 10-game homestand to close out the regular season. Montgomery welcomes the Chattanooga Lookouts for five games, which includes Alabama State vs. Tuskegee Night on T-Shirt Thursday on August 23. The Tennessee Smokies come into the Capital City for Troy University and Community Night with MAX Fireworks on August 24.
