MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Jazz Chisolm's Southern League-leading 11th home run of the season broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh and handed the Biscuits (29-18) a 3-2 loss to the Jackson Generals (26-20) on Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium. The Biscuits lead in the First Half North Division is now down to 2.5 games.
Sam McWilliams (3-2) was on the mound for the Biscuits, and the right-hander served up a home run to Generals leadoff hitter Ryan Grotjohn in the first at-bat of the game. Friday was Grotjohn's second-straight night with a homer, his first two at the Double-A level.
McWilliams would settle down after that, however, and got some help from his counterpart Riley Smith whose throwing error to third tied the game at one in the second after back-to-back singles by Jesús Sánchez and Tristan Gray. Later in the inning, Kevin Padlo delivered a sac fly, and gave the Biscuits their first lead since Wednesday at 2-1.
Grotjohn would come through again in the third with a sac fly of his own, while Josh Lowe turned a terrific F8-5 double play in the process, keeping it 2-2. The Biscuits would turn another double play beginning in the outfield that went F9-6-4 in the fourth with Sanchez, Lucius Fox, and Jermaine Palacios all contributing.
The game remained deadlocked until Chisolm led off the seventh with a rocket over the right field wall. The home run tied the shortstop with Chattanooga Lookouts slugger Ibandel Isabel for the league lead. Lucas Luetge (4-1) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in relief of Smith, and Junior Garcia a scoreless eighth, before handing the ball over the Matt Brill for the ninth.
Fox would slash a one-out single off Brill in the bottom of the ninth, but Rene Pinto struck out, and Padlo popped out to third on a 3-0 pitch to end the game.
The Biscuits will look to avoid their first home series loss of the season on Saturday when Kenny Rosenberg (3-1) takes on Justin Donatella (2-0) at 6:05 PM CT when it will be Greenbow Night featuring a Bobblehead Giveaway presented by Capital Trailways and MAX Fireworks.
