MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (37-36) fell in a fourth straight game, losing to the Birmingham Barons (35-36), 6-3, Saturday on Family Faith Night at Riverwalk Stadium. Montgomery starter J.D. Martin (4-9) surrendered five runs - four of which were earned - in 5.1 innings.
After stranding two runners in the opening frame, Martin could not escape the second inning unscathed. The knuckleballer allowed a Jameson Fisher lead-off single and RBI-double to Matt Rose, charging the Barons ahead, 1-0.
The Biscuits responded in the bottom of the second. Nathan Lukes singled with one out, coming around to score on an RBI-double by Mike Brosseau. Brosseau sped home from third base after Barons' catcher Zack Collins attempted to throw out a stealing Thomas Milone, sailing the ball into center field.
Despite Montgomery seizing momentum, Martin allowed Birmingham to tie the game at 2-2, as Joel Booker hit his first Double-A home run. In the sixth, Birmingham chased the 35-year old from the mound. Three straight hits, culminating on a two-run triple by Fisher, spurred Martin's departure in favor of Curtis Taylor. With Taylor in relief, Fisher scored on a passed ball, widening the advantage to 5-2.
Although the Biscuits chipped into the deficit, pulling within two runs on an RBI-single by Peter Maris, Nick Solak flew out to center field with two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth.
In the ninth, Birmingham plated its sixth run on a sacrifice fly by Trey Michalczewski. Barons' reliever José Ruiz kept the Biscuits' bats at bay, stranding runners on the corners and one out by retiring Dalton Kelly and Mike Brosseau.
Montgomery continues a six-game homestand against the Birmingham Barons Sunday at 5:05 p.m. when the Biscuits celebrate the 25th Anniversary of The Sandlot with a Youth Jersey Giveaway. Montgomery will look to Génesis Cabrera (5-4) while the Barons will turn to Bernardo Flores (NR), who will be making his Double-A debut.
The remainder of the series includes Golden Biscuits Monday on June 25 and Southern Fried Southern League on Tuesday, June 26.
