Looking to continue their winning ways throughout the month of August, Toledo welcomed the visiting Buffalo Bisons back for the second of a four-game set that will take place over the course of this weekend.
After taking game number one in Thursday night's game, the Mud Hens fell by a score of 5-2 in this one.
Myles Jaye was the starting pitcher for Toledo and while he struggled with his command, he was able to get through with a quality start. He pitched six innings and though he allowed nine hits, just three runers were able to cross home against him.
Brett Oberholtzer was his opponent for Buffalo and was able to get a quality start of his own. he also went six innings and allowed nine hits, but he had just two earned runs.
The Mud Hens were able to get on the board quickly, scraping together a few hits and converting a run in the bottom of the first. Omar Infante led the game off with a single up the middle an Jason Krizan later followed with a single of his own. With two outs Bryan Holaday was able to make Oberholtzer pay with a double to left field to make it 1-0.
Despite a pair of walks that put two men on with one out in the second and two singles that did the same in the third, Jaye was able to work around it and induced two double play balls to get out of it without any damage. On the second of two double players, Infante made a diving play, shuffled the ball with his glove and Brendan Ryan made the quick throw on a tremendous play.
Buffalo was able to threaten once more in the top of the fifth. Jon Berti reached base on a fielder's choice and Roemon Fields pushed him forward to third with a single. Christian Lopes took advantage of the runner in scoring position by ripping a single to left field and tying things up at 1.
It didn't take long for the Mud Hens to respond, as in the bottom of the fifth Ryan hit a double and Alex Presley hit into a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with two outs. Jeimer Candelario hit a single to right field that scored Ryan and put the Mud Hens back in the driver's seat with a 2-1 lead.
Buffalo struck right back in the top of the sixth. Michael Saunders led off the inning with a single and Rowdy Tellez added his own with one out. Danny Jansen was able to continue his hot streak with a single to left field that tied things back up.
The Bisons were right back at it in the top of the seventh inning as Berti led off the frame with a triple that chased the starter Jaye from the game. Fields followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners and Lopes was again able to capitalize; this time with a double to left field that scored both runners and gave Buffalo the 4-2 advantage. He was able to come home on a sacrifice fly by Jake Elmore that made it 5-2.
Buffalo's bullpen was able to continue their strong night, holding Toledo scoreless after a run that crossed on Oberholtzer in the bottom of the fifth. Tim Mayza took over in the seventh and continued scoreless through the eighth, while John Stilson picked up where he left off to close out the game and give the Bisons the win.
The Mud Hens continue their series with the Bisons on Saturday night. Buck Farmer is set to take the hill for Toledo; first pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
