Mudcats Drop Heartbreaker in Extras, 2-1

September 4, 2012

Frederick, M.D. - The Frederick Keys benefitted from some controversial calls in the tenth inning, and shocked the Carolina Mudcats 2-1 on Sunday night at Harry Grove Stadium. The Mudcats have lost three in a row, and drop to 63-76.

Jeff Johnson (0-2) entered the deciding frame with the score tied 1-1. He issued a lead-off walk to Glynn Davis, and tried a pickoff move with Jerome Pena batting. Home plate umpire Rich Gonzalez, who had already drawn the ire of both sides, called a balk on Johnson. Davis was awarded second as the Mudcats argued. After things calmed down, Pena bunted Davis over to third.

Tyler Townsend hit the first pitch into shallow center where Delvi Cid made the catch. The center fielder's throw was online to home plate as Davis attempted to score. The throw appeared to beat the runner, but Gonzalez ruled Davis safe to end the game.

David Walters (3-6) earned the win for Frederick (61-77), despite blowing the save. With the Keys leading 1-0 in the 9th, Giovanny Urshela homered off the right-hander to tie the score.

Brenden Webb cranked a blast around the right field foul pole off of starter Michael Goodnight in the fifth, giving Frederick a 1-0 advantage.

The Carolina Mudcats finish the regular season against Frederick Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. Tickets are available by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
