Mudcats bounce back with twin bill sweep in Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, VA - Corbin Burnes pitched through six scoreless with three strikeouts, Troy Stokes Jr. and Weston Wilson both had run scoring singles in the seventh and Nate Griep earned his third save as the Mudcats defeated the Hillcats 2-0 in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Calvin Falwell Field.

Burnes (3-0, 1.13) scattered four hits, walked one and earned his third win of the season while nearly going the distance in game one of Wednesday's twin bill. Nate Griep pitched the ninth and earned his third save of the year.
Brett Hartson started for the Hillcats (16-14) and worked through six scoreless before the Mudcats (14-18) scored twice against him and reliever Justin Garcia in the seventh inning.
Hartson (1-1, 3.00) pitched the beginning of the seventh, but left after allowing a lead off double to Isan Díaz and after getting Jake Gatewood to fly out to right. Garcia then entered and went on to walk Trent Clark to put runners at first and third for Stokes. The Mudcats then jumped out to 1-0 lead in the final frame as Stokes hit a double to deep left-center. Wilson later followed with a bases loaded single and the Mudcats led 2-0 midway through the seventh. 
Griep (S, 3) later entered out of the bullpen and went on to strike out one and walk one all while earning his third save of the year.
NOTES: Jake Gatewood was 1-for-3 and extended his current hitting streak to 19 consecutive games.
Clark leads the way as Mudcats sweep Wednesday doubleheader
The Mudcats overcame a late deficit and outlasted a one hour and eight minute rain delay on Wednesday
LYNCHBURG, VA - Trent Clark gave the Mudcats the lead with a two-run single in the fifth and Jake Gatewood had a RBI single while extending his hitting streak to 20 straight games as the Mudcats won game two and swept Wednesday's doubleheader 3-1 in Lynchburg.
Clark's two-run single in the fifth came against reliever Jordan Milbrath and scored both Wendell Rijo and Carlos Belonis to give the Mudcats (15-18) a 2-1 lead. Gatewood followed with a run scoring hit of his own and was 1-for-3 with one RBI while extending his hitting streak to a career high 20 straight games.
Milbrath (1-1, 7.36) suffered the loss after losing Lynchburg's 1-0 lead with three runs allowed in the fifth. He followed Billy Strode who started for the Hillcats (16-15) the game and went through two and 2/3 scoreless against Carolina.
Wuilder Rodriguez started for the Mudcats and worked through four and 1/3 innings before being knocked out of the game following a one hour eight minute rain delay occurring with one out in the fifth inning. 
Rodriguez did not earn a decision and ended up with just the one run allowed on four hits. He also walked two and struck out three.
Quintin Torres-Costa (4-1, 3.38) followed Rodriguez and pitched through a total of an inning and 2/3 scoreless with three strikeouts and earned his fourth win of the year.
Lynchburg led first in Wednesday's twin bill after getting a run in the second scored by Connor Marabell. Marabell was 2-for-2 with two doubles in the game two loss for his club.
The Hillcats also used relievers Paul Hendrix (0.2, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) and Kieran Lovegrove (1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 SO).
