Pelicans Edge Mudcats on Late Mishap, 4-3

August 31, 2013

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans scored a 4-3 comeback win over the Carolina Mudcats on Saturday night at TicketReturn.com Field. Drew Robinson scored the winning run from second base when Jerrud Sabourin's throw to first on a bunt attempt sailed into right field.

The Pelicans (36-32, 76-61) improved to 7-1 on the Grand Strand against the Mudcats (34-34, 56-82).

Cody (1-0) picked up the win in his Carolina League debut. With two out in the ninth, the left-hander was called on to face Jordan Smith with runners at the corners. Ege struck out Smith to end the threat.

Rob Nixon (3-6) was left with the loss after the rally. Robinson stroked a double off the right-hander to begin the ninth. Trever Adams attempted to bunt him to third on the next at-bat and the throwing error scored Robinson.

The comeback spoiled a terrific start from Cole Cook. The right-hander pitched a season-high seven innings. He allowed three runs on five hits with four strikeouts.

Joey Wendle launched an opposite field homer in the first inning to put Carolina on top. The round-tripper scored Smith for a 2-0 lead. It was the 16th of the year for Wendle.

Alex Lavisky and Todd Hankins cracked back-to-back doubles with two away in the second for a 3-0 lead.

Myrtle Beach chipped away with a run in the third and finally tied it with a two-out, two-run homer from Robinson in the sixth.

The Mudcats continue their season-ending series in Myrtle Beach on Sunday evening at 6:05 p.m. Shawn Morimando makes his final start and throws opposite right-hander Nick McBride. Carolina opens the 2014 season with a home game against Potomac Nationals on Thursday, April 14, 2014.
