OREM, Utah-The Orem Owlz earned their fifth Pioneer League Championship on Friday, topping the Billings Mustangs 3-2 to sweep the series at Brent Brown Ballpark in Utah.

The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Jose Siri popped up just in front of home plate for what appeared to be a routine out. Catcher Keinner Pina could not make the catch and Siri turned the mistake into a double. He scored two batters later on the grounder from Michael Beltre.

L.J. Kalawaia gave the Owlz their first lead of the night in the next inning when he homered to right off Billings starter Wennington Romero. Kalawaia would drive in all three Orem runs in the game. Romero went five innings in the start, giving up two runs and bringing his total to a team-high 11.2 innings of work in the playoffs.

The Mustangs didn't waste any time tying the game back up, however. Alberti Chavez led off the top of the sixth with a single and scored from second on Taylor Trammell's RBI single to center later in the inning. It was Chavez's first appearance in the playoffs this year.

With the game tied 2-2, the Mustangs could not find any more offense the rest of the night. Orem gained the lead back in a seventh inning which involved a hit-by-pitch and two walks, but no hits. Kalawaia flew a sacrifice fly to center to score the third and decisive run for Orem.

Billings got the tying run into scoring position in the ninth when Michael Beltre and Hector Vargas each came up with singles, but Beltre would be stranded at second.

The loss concludes the Mustangs season.
