HELENA, Montana - The Billings Mustangs (18-19, 41-34) closed the regular season with a 7-1 win over the Helena Brewers (13-23, 28-46) in front of 905 at Kindrick Legion Field.
Soid Marquez (6-3) made his first start of the year on Thursday, pitching five innings in the start. He allowed just one run on five hits while striking out three.
Billings jumped on the board first when they scored three runs in the top of the third inning. Montrell Marshall was walked with the bases loaded to score T.J. Friedl. Consecutive passed balls then scored Satchel McElroy and Ty Blankmeyer.
Helena scored their lone run of the game in the fourth on a Ronnie Gideon homerun. It was his 17th of the season to finish the year as the Pioneer League leader, one ahead of Cody Thomas.
Aaron Quillen, Alfredo Mena and Carlos Machorro pitched four shutout innings of relief. The Brewers did not record a hit after the fifth and had their last 12 of 13 batters retired.
The Mustangs now travel to Great Falls for the first game of three in the Pioneer League North Divisional Series. First pitch on Friday from Centene Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
