June 12, 2022, will forever be remembered as the “Kevin Alcantara Game” as the Pelicans took the series finale 15-6 over the Carolina Mudcats on Sunday afternoon. The series-clinching win moved the Pelicans to a 40-17 record while the Mudcats dropped to a 30-27 mark.

Alcantara (4-6, 2 HR, 3B, 8 RBI) set a franchise record with eight runs driven in off two three-run home runs and a two-run triple. His eight RBI game tops Peter Matt’s previous single-game franchise record seven RBI game on May 4th at Salem. Ezequiel Pagan (2-4, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2 BB) provided two runs in the victorious effort. Myrtle Beach collected 14 hits for the game.

Tyler Schlaffer (2-3) tossed five innings and earned the win after giving up two solo home runs in the first and second innings. The Pelicans’ starter gave up three hits and a walk while tallying seven strikeouts. Jose Miguel Gonzalez followed with three one-run innings with four strikeouts.

The Mudcats turned seven hits into six runs with Hedbert Perez (2-4, HR, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R) leading the team with a solo home run in the second. Eduardo Garcia (1-4, HR, RBI, R) got the scoring started with a solo homer in the first to lead off.

Sunday’s loss went to Jeferson Figueroa (0-3) after being taken out in the first inning with two outs. Figueroa gave up five runs with one earned off a hit and three walks in his short outing. Miguel Segura gave up a bulk of the runs as the fourth pitcher used with five earned through five innings. Carolina committed five errors in the loss.

Myrtle Beach set the tone with five runs in the opening frame to take a commanding lead early. With runners on second and third, Alcantara blasted a triple to center field to score two for his first hit of the game. Alcantara scored on a fielding error by Jesus Chirinos at first base off the bat of BJ Murray. Jacob Wetzel put runners on the corners by reaching on a fielding error at short. Murray scored on a wild pitch by Figueroa and Pagan brought in Wetzel on an infield single to make it 5-0 Pelicans after the top of the first.

Garica hit his fifth home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the first. Perez homered with one out in the second for the Mudcats’ second run.

Another five runs came in the top of the third for Myrtle Beach to break the game open. Felix Stevens scored on a wild pitch and Ezequiel Pagan knocked in Mora for his second RBI. With two runners on, Alcantara hit a three-run homer to left-center field for his eighth of the season as the Pelicans went up 10-2.

Alcantara’s third home run of the game came in the seventh inning on another three-run shot for his ninth of the season. With the home run, Alcantara set the single-game franchise record for Myrtle Beach with his eighth RBI.

Two sacrifice flies by Juan Mora and Malcom Quintero finished off the scoring for the Pelicans in the top of the eighth for a 15-2 lead.

Chirinos hit an RBI single for a Mudcats’ run in the bottom of the eighth.

Three late runs came in the bottom of the ninth for the Mudcats as Perez doubled to bring in the first. Jheremy Vargas singled to right to plate two more as the lead was cut to 15-6.

The Pelicans return to Myrtle Beach for a six-game set with the Fredericksburg Nationals starting on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
