MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (June 9, 2019) - Former Myrtle Beach Pelicans pitcher, Tayler Scott, made his major league debut on Saturday, June 8, for the Seattle Mariners. Scott is the 178th Pelicans player to play in the major leagues and the second of 2019. He tossed 2.2 innings of relief against the Los Angeles Angels.
The former Cubs' farmhand allowed three runs on four hits and struck out four in a 12-3 Mariners' loss.
Scott, 27, was the first South African born player to pitch in the majors. Gift Ngoepe became the first position player from South Africa when he debuted in 2017 for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The right hander was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, but moved to Arizona when he was 16-years-old and played his high school ball at Notre Dame Prep in Scottdale, Arizona.
Originally selected out of high school in the fifth round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft, Scott spent a portion of the 2015 season with Myrtle Beach.
Scott made 11 appearances, including one start, for the Pelicans and was dominant. He fired 23 innings and posted a 2-2 record with a 1.96 ERA. Opponents hit just .222 off of him and Scott struck out 27 and walked just six before his promotion to Double-A Tennessee on May 30, 2015.
After the 2015 season, the Cubs released Scott and he signed with the Milwaukee Brewers in July of 2016 after appearing in 17 games for the Sioux City Explorers in the American Association an independent baseball league.
In 2017, the Brewers dealt Scott to the Texas Rangers in exchange for RHP Jeremy Jeffress.
Following two seasons in the Rangers system at the Triple-A level, Scott elected free agency after the 2018 season and signed with Seattle on January 24, 2019.
After a slow start to the year, Scott has been lights out since May 1. The right hander threw 19.2 innings during that stretch at Triple-A Tacoma and posted an ERA of 1.83 to earn his promotion to Seattle.
Scott joins Eloy Jimenez (White Sox) as the two former Birds to debut this season.
