WOODBRIDGE, Va. (August 9, 2017) - A Trent Giambrone home run Wednesday wasn't enough for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in a 3-2 loss to the Potomac Nationals at Pfitzner Stadium.

The Pelicans led (59-56, 16-29) 1-0 in the fourth inning when Austin Davidson and Ian Sagdal began the frame with singles to put runners on the corners. Myrtle Beach starter Thomas Hatch (4-10) uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Davidson to score to knot the tally at one. Hatch struck out Taylor Gushue before walking David Masters. Rhett Wiseman then tripled in two runs to put Potomac (52-62, 19-25) ahead 3-1.

Giambrone homered off Nationals starter Sterling Sharp (1-1) with one out in the sixth to pull the Birds to within 3-2. Sharp yielded just two runs on six hits in his six frames to earn the win. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.

With the score still 3-2, Jesse Hodges began the ninth with a single before moving to second on a wild pitch. However, Gilberto Mendez was able to strand the tying run to earn his 11th save of the season.

Myrtle Beach initially got on the board to break a scoreless tie in the fourth. Giambrone singled with one out before stealing second base. Two batters later, Vimael Machin laced a ground rule double to center to give the Birds a 1-0 advantage.

Hatch yielded three runs on five hits in his five innings of work. Dakota Mekkes pitched two scoreless frames and Pedro Araujo twirled a shutout eighth.

LHP Ryan Kellogg (3-7, 5.49 ERA) toes the rubber for the Pelicans in Thursday's 12:05 p.m. contest, as Myrtle Beach looks to avoid a series sweep against P-Nats RHP Joan Baez (1-8, 4.80 ERA). Coverage begins at 11:50 a.m. on, the MiLB First Pitch app and TuneIn.
