MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (August 6, 2019) - Myrtle Beach Pelicans' pitchers Jack Patterson and Brailyn Marquez have been named the Chicago Cubs Minor League Co-Pitchers of the Month for July, the organization announced Tuesday.
Patterson, the Suffield, Connecticut native, continued his dominance on the season in the month of July as he went 2-0 and had a 0.00 ERA, allowing only one unearned run in 23.2 innings with the Pelicans. During July, Patterson made five starts, only ceding eight hits while holding opponents to a .104 batting average against.
The southpaw has now thrown 34-consecutive innings without giving up an earned run and in his last ten outings, between South Bend and Myrtle Beach, Patterson is 5-0 with a 0.25 ERA in 36.2 innings.
The Cubs originally selected Patterson in the 32nd round of the 2018 MLB draft out of Bryant University and, this season, the lefty is 7-1 with a 1.50 ERA. He has struck out 71 batters in 66 innings on the year.
Patterson, the No. 27 prospect in the Cubs' system according to MLB.com, leads all Carolina Leaguers with at least 20 innings of work this season with a 66.0 percent ground ball rate.
After his dominant month of July, the 24-year-old was promoted to Double-A Tennessee on Tuesday.
Marquez, who was promoted to Myrtle Beach from Low-A South Bend on Tuesday, went 2-1 with a 1.65 ERA in five starts for South Bend in the month of July. The southpaw struck out 41 batters in 27.1 innings during the month and opponents managed just a .175 batting average against him.
The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native, is the No. 4 rated prospect in the Cubs' farm system according to MLB.com and is the highest ranked pitching prospect.
The 20-year-old was particularly dominant in his last two outings of the month as he set a new career high in strikeouts when he punched out a South Bend record 14 in six innings against the Lake County Captains and followed that up with an eight-strikeout performance across six-hitless innings in a win over West Michigan.
His performance against Lake County earned Marquez the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of July 22-28.
On the season, Marquez is 5-4 with a 3.61 ERA and is third among Cubs' farmhands with 102 strikeouts in 77.1 innings.
Marquez, who was signed by the Cubs in 2016, has been virtually untouchable by left-handed hitters this season as he is holding them to a .106 batting average on the year.
Marquez joins Patterson and Tyler Durna as the three Pelicans to claim monthly awards as Patterson and Durna took home the Cubs' Pitcher and Player of the Month awards in the month of June, respectively.
Pedro Martinez of the Eugene Emeralds was named the Cubs Minor League Player of the Month for July after he hit .403/.481/.552 with the Arizona Cubs before going 6-for-15 in five games with Eugene to end the month.
The 2019 season is the 21st season for the Pelicans franchise and fifth as the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.
