The seven runs marked a new season-high for the Pelicans for runs in an inning

Going into the ninth inning tied 3-3, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans exploded for seven runs to earn a series tie against the Columbia Fireflies with a 10-6 win on Sunday night, With the victory, the Birds snap a three-game losing streak and move to 21-26 on the season. The Pelicans also won six of seven games played on Sundays this year. The Fireflies drop to 25-19 with the loss.

A pair of late home runs pushed the Pelicans over the edge in the eighth and ninth innings. Jacob Wetzel (1-5, HR, 3 RBI) smacked a three-run homer over the right-field wall to give the Pelicans a 6-3 lead in the ninth inning for his third of the year. Yohendrick Pinango (2-4, 2 R) and Fabian Pertuz (2-4, 2B, RBI) also picked up multi-hit performances.

While Myrtle Beach walked a season-high 12 batters, six pitchers limited the Fireflies to six hits for the evening with Bailey Reid (2-3) taking the win after tossing the seventh inning and striking out the side. Jake Reindl earned his first save by retiring the final batter to end the game.

The visitors got the scoring started as Myrtle Beach put up a pair of runs to take an early lead in their half of the third. Flemin Bautista worked a one-out walk and moved to second on a fielder’s choice by Pinango where he also reached base to put runners on first and second. Mervis came up and rocked a double to left-center field that scored both runs and gave the Birds a 2-0 lead.

Columbia responded with their first run in the bottom half. Pelicans’ starter Adam Laskey walked the bases loaded with one out and gave up another walk to Kale Emshoff on a 3-2 count to bring home Tyler Tolbert. Laskey walked six for the game, a season-high for a Pelicans pitcher.

Both teams went scoreless until the Fireflies took their first lead of the game in the seventh. With the new arm, Estrada walked the following two batters to load the bases up once again with nobody out. Gonzalez came up next and lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Jaquez to tie the game at two. Tolbert struck out swinging, but Collins picked up his first RBI with a single back up the middle to score Gage Hughes and give the home team the lead.
