MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (August 20, 2019)- The Myrtle Beach Pelicans exploded for six runs in the first inning and that was enough to stymie the Carolina Mudcats 6-2 in the series opener on Tuesday night from TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Pelicans (30-27, 51-73) wasted no time at all getting to the Mudcats' (23-34, 62- 64) starter Christian Taugner (L, 5-9) in the series opener. After back-to-back walks to Carlos Sepulveda and Delvin Zinn to lead off the ballgame, Grant Fennell laced an RBI single to left that gave the Pelicans a 1-0 lead. Miguel Amaya then singled to load the bases before Luke Reynolds plated a pair on a single to center that made it 3-0.
Myrtle Beach made it a 5-0 game after a two-run double from Aramis Ademan down the right field line and the Birds took a 6-0 lead when Ademan scored on a single from Kevonte Mitchell .
The Mudcats eventually got to Brailyn Marquez (W, 3-0) in the fourth inning when Rob Henry singled in Pat McInerney to make it a 6-1 ballgame. The run was the first that Marquez had surrendered in 28-straight innings between Low-A South Bend and Myrtle Beach.
Marquez finished the night after 5.1 innings and allowed just one run on five hits and struck out eight in the win.
Carolina tacked on a run in the seventh when Leugim Castillo scored on an error that cut the gap to 6-2, but that would be the final.
Manuel Rodriguez fired two scoreless innings out of the bullpen to close out the ballgame for Myrtle Beach.
The Pelicans and Mudcats will continue their three-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Myrtle Beach has yet to announce a starter for the ballgame and Carolina will send RHP Matt Smith (4-10, 3.51) to the hill in the middle game of the series.
