MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (May 29, 2018) - Myrtle Beach right-hander Keegan Thompson has been named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 21-27, the league office announced Monday. Thompson is the first Pelicans' pitcher to earn the honor this season.
A native of Cullman, Ala., Thompson allowed a two-out single to Keston Hiura of Carolina on May 26 before retiring the last 16 men he faced over his six innings. While striking out a career-high eight, the former Auburn Tiger did not walk a batter. Tyler Peyton entered in the seventh inning and retired all nine men that he faced to end the game on a stretch of 25 straight batters sat down, setting a Pelicans' record for fewest base runners allowed in a nine-inning game (one) in recorded club history (since the 2005 season). Myrtle Beach beat the Mudcats 1-0 and took the rain-shortened series 2-1.
A former third round selection of the Cubs in 2017, Thompson is 2-3 this season with a 3.61 ERA. Over 47.1 innings, he has whiffed 49 while just walking nine, ceding 42 hits.
The Pelicans will start a three-game series and a six-game home stand with the Winston-Salem Dash on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Thompson is slated to start on Saturday against against the Down East Wood Ducks.
Tuesday's game is $2 Tacos and Tallboys presented by Abuelos Restuarant.
