MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (April 10, 2018) - Daniel Spingola popped a three-run home run, but late insurance runs on Tuesday night propelled the Winston Salem Dash to a 6-4 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
Leading 3-1 into the eighth inning, the Dash (3-3) tacked on two more runs on back-to-back RBI doubles from Micker Adolfo and Yermin Mercedes to make it 5-1. Those tallies would prove to be the difference in the game.
In the bottom of the inning, Spingola drew the Pelicans (1-5) within a run by blasting a three-run home run, scoring Andruw Monasterio and Connor Myers , who had reached on a single and walk, respectively.
Joel Booker answered right back in the top of the ninth inning for Winston-Salem with a solo shot of his own to extend the lead to 6-4 and put the game out of reach. Matt Foster worked a scoreless bottom of the ninth for his first save.
To begin the game, the Dash jumped out in front early on Birds' starter Matt Swarmer (0-1), who took the loss in his 4.2 innings. In the first inning, Gavin Sheets lined an RBI single down the left field line, but he was thrown out trying to extend the hit to a double.
Luis Alexander Basabe then smashed his first of two RBI singles on the night in the third inning to give the Dash a 2-0 lead.
The Pelicans found the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. After Monasterio reached on an error, Myers bunted a ball up the first base line. Dash starter Jimmy Lambert (1-0) threw the ball away up the right field line, which allowed Monasterio to score. However, Myers was thrown out at third on the play. Myers reached three times on the night with two walks and the bunt single.
Basabe's second RBI single gave the Dash a 3-1 lead in the fifth.
Lambert earned the win, only allowing one unearned run and one hit over five innings.
