Fisher Cats Fall in Third Straight Close Game

New Hampshire starts hot, falters late at Somerset

Bridgewater Township, N.J. – The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (11-13) lost, 5-3, to the Somerset Patriots (New York Yankees, 16-8) on Thursday night after gaining an early lead. Bridgewater Township, N.J. – The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (11-13) lost, 5-3, to the Somerset Patriots (New York Yankees, 16-8) on Thursday night after gaining an early lead. All three games between New Hampshire and Somerset have been decided by one or two runs.

Orelvis Martinez got the scoring started in the third inning with a two-out RBI single into center field that scored John Aiello.

New Hampshire starter Hayden Juenger tossed 3.0 hitless, scoreless innings in his fifth start of the season. He walked one and struck out four, throwing 38 pitches. Juenger has not allowed a run in four of his six outings this season.

New Hampshire led, 1-0, through the fifth inning.

Martinez doubled the New Hampshire lead in the sixth when he crushed his eighth homer of the season over the fence in left-center field. Orelvis is tied with Sean Roby of Richmond for the most home runs in the Eastern League.

Spencer Horwitz also doubled in the frame and scored on a wild pitch to put New Hampshire ahead, 3-0.

Braden Scott threw 2.1 innings after Juenger and kept the combined no-hit bid until the bottom of the fifth. He allowed one hit and one earned run, walking two and striking out four. Zac Cook helped Scott with a diving catch on the right field line in the sixth inning.

Later in the inning, former MLBer Derek Dietrich crushed his second homer in as many days to cut the New Hampshire lead to one, 3-2.

Righty reliever Gabriel Ponce (L, 0-1) got the nod with runners on first and second and one out in the seventh. He struck out two straight batters and retired the first two he faced in the eighth before hitting Dietrich with a pitch.

The hit by pitch proved to be the beginning of the Cats’ unraveling. Somerset scored three runs with two outs in the eighth to win, 5-3.

The Fisher Cats continue their six-game stretch at Somerset tomorrow, May 6 with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. They return home on May 10 for a six-game series against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (New York Mets).
