Isaac Galloway had three hits, including the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth inning, and the New Orleans Baby Cakes defeated the Omaha Storm Chasers, 9-5 on Monday night.
With the score tied 5-5, Eric Campbell led off the ninth with a single, stole second base and advanced to third on a fly out. Galloway then lined a single up the middle for his third hit of the night to give the Baby Cakes their first lead since the second inning.
Galloway folowed with a steal of second base, his 11th of the season and 61st of his New Orleans career to tie Colin Porter's franchise record, then raced home on Austin Nola's third single of the game. Rafael Ortega provided further insurance with a long home run to right field, his second of the year, and the second Baby Cakes homer of the contest.
Austin Dean took the game's first offering from Wily Peralta over the left field fence for a quick lead, and Ortega's RBI single an inning later cashed in Galloway's leadoff double for a 2-0 advantage.
Omaha answered with three runs in the bottom of the second, capitalizing on a pair of defensive miscues by the Baby Cakes, who entered the game with the Pacific Coast League's best fielding percentage. Ryan O'Hearn homered leading off the third to put Omaha ahead, 4-2.
A passed ball and a wild pitch gifted the Baby Cakes a run in the top of the fourth, but the Storm Chasers again came back with a run in their half of the frame by stringing together three singles against Zac Gallen.
Gallen, whose 2.25 ERA entering the game ranked second in the PCL, battled through four innings and gave up five runs on eight hits. But Mike Kickham came out of the bullpen to pitch three scoreless innings to keep the 'Cakes within striking distance, and the offense responded with a pair of runs in the sixth to draw even.
Jumbo Diaz (3-3) worked the final two innings to pick up the victory, and Justin Grimm (0-1) was charged with three of the runs in the ninth to suffer the loss.
The 'Cakes have won all five meetings at Werner Park this season, and continue the four-game set on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m.
