Peter Mooney's sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning drove in the winning run in the New Orleans Baby Cakes' 4-3 victory over the Memphis Redbirds on Tuesday night.
New Orleans won for the ninth time in its last 10 games and has won six straight on the road for the first time since June 2007.
Each of the game's first six runs came on homers, including three solo blasts by the Baby Cakes. Peter O'Brien continued his hot hitting with a second-inning home run, his third consecutive game going deep and fourth in that span. Tomas Telis clubbed his third homer of the season with one out in the fifth, and Jon Rodriguez followed with his team-leading 12th to give New Orleans a 3-0 cushion.
It marked the second time this season the 'Cakes hit back-to-back home runs, both times coming against Memphis. Austin Dean and Magneuris Sierra did so at the Shrine on June 3.
Sandy Alcantara eased through the first four innings, limiting the Redbirds to two hits with six strikeouts, before encountering trouble in the fifth. Wilfredo Tovar doubled with one out, went to third on a single by pitcher Austin Warner and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tommy Edman before Rangel Ravelo drilled a two-run homer to tie the game.
In eight games against the Baby Cakes, Ravelo is 18-for-28 with four home runs and 12 RBI.
The score remained knotted into extra innings, when the 'Cakes brought in the runner from second courtesy of a Rodriguez single and Mooney's sacrifice fly. Nick Wittgren was able to strand the potential tying run at third in the bottom half of the frame to nail down his second save.
Ben Meyer (4-4) worked three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to pick up the victory after Alcantara turned in a six-inning quality start. Andrew Morales (1-3) took the loss for Memphis, which saw its division lead over Nashville shrink to eight games, its slimmest edge since June 22. That was also the last time New Orleans, now 59-61 on the season, was within two games of the .500 mark.
The 'Cakes and Redbirds continue the four-game set on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.
