Deven Marrero's bases-clearing double keyed a four-run third inning in the New Orleans Baby Cakes' 6-3 win over the Memphis Redbirds on Saturday night.
New Orleans claimed the series opener to inch within five games of San Antonio for the division lead.
Rosell Herrera began the third-inning rally.with a single and came.around to score the game's first run on a single by Jon Berti, who joined the 'Cakes on a rehab assignment from Miami.
After Isan Diaz walked, Lewis Brinson singled to load the bases for Marrero, whose double put the Baby Cakes in front, 4-0.
Diaz homered in the fifth inning to push the lead to 5-1. It was Diaz's second straight game.with a home run and his team-leading 18th of the season, just two shy of his career high.
Hector Noesi (8-4) tossed a season-high 115 pitches across 7 2/3 innings to earn his eighth victory, scattering two earned runs and seven hits. Kyle Keller recorded the final four outs to pick up his seventh save.
Andrew Knizer had three hits, including a home run, for the Redbirds.
The five-game series continues Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
