Lane Thomas hit a three-run homer in the third inning, providing the Memphis Redbirds with enough offense to defeat the New Orleans Baby Cakes, 3-2 on Thursday night.
Randy Arozarena sparked the rally with a leadoff double, and after a one-out walk to Tommy Edman, Thomas drilled his third home run of the season to give the Redbirds a 3-0 edge.
The Baby Cakes answered with two runs in the fourth off Tyler Lyons. A leadoff walk to Cristhian Adames was followed by a Peter O'Brien double, and Adames scored on an error. With two outs, Jon Rodriguez delivered an RBI double to bring the 'Cakes within a run.
But New Orleans would get no closer, as Chris Ellis, Tyler Webb, and Andrew Morales combined to limit the Baby Cakes to two hits over the final 5 2/3 innings. Ellis (5-4) recorded five strikeouts and earned the win, with Morales picking up his sixth save.
The teams combined for just eight hits, one night after the 'Cakes won a 10-6 slugfest.
Jeff Brigham (4-1) was dealt his first Triple-A loss despite a quality start which saw him yield three runs and three hits in six innings. Metairie native Kyle Keller chipped in two scoreless frames in his Triple-A debut.
New Orleans dropped the series finale in their bid to win eight consecutive road games for the first time since 2001 and only the second time in franchise history.
The 'Cakes continue the road trip on Friday in Nashville with the opener of a three-game set. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
