Portland, ME - A tight contest was turned on its side as Portland scored six runs in the fifth inning to break a tie ballgame and won going away 10-3 in the series opener Friday night at Hadlock Field.
The first six batters batted without being retired. A bases loaded double by Brett Netzer started the scoring, driving home two runs to lift Portland to a 5-3 lead. Tate Matheny then singled home a run and Baysox starter Hunter Harvey was lifted. In came Dillon Tate who's first pitch was lifted for a three run home run to right-center by Luke Tendler and Portland was on top 9-3.
The Baysox came back twice in the ballgame earlier. Down 1-0 in the fourth inning, Ryan McKenna scored from first on a gapper RBI-triple off the bat of Yusniel Díaz. With two down, Rylan Bannon lined a single to left scoring Diaz to give Bowie their lone lead of the game 2-1.
An inning later down 3-2, Mason McCoy walked with two down and then stole second base. He scored easily as McKenna ripped a ball off the wall in left-center. The RBI-double tied the game at 3.
For McKenna it was his first three-hit game of the year. He is now 8-for-18 on the road trip that has taken him home to New England. Bannon registered three hits marking a second consecutive day achieving that feat. Tate worked an inning and 2/3rd's and then gave way to Cristian Alvarado who allowed a solo home run in 2 and 1/3rd innings of work.
Bowie looks to bounce back on Saturday evening with Zac Lowther on the hill for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch. Coverage begins 20-minutes prior on wnav.com, baysox.com and via the Tune-In App by searching Baysox.
The Baysox return home Tuesday, June 11th for a week long homestand. Father's Day Weekend will feature Fireworks on Friday and Saturday nights. Get tickets at 301-464-4865 or purchase online at baysox.com.
