Bombers pitch no-hitter -- and lose
Savannah, a Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, parlayed five walks, two hit batters and two wild pitches into a four-run third inning.
The Sand Gnats trailed, 2-0, with one out in the third, but Douglas Vroman walked and stole second against Bombers starter Gary Galvez, who hit John Poppert and was replaced by Jesus Delgado.
Delgado had trouble finding the plate, walking Rogearvin Bernadina and hitting Ian Desmond to force in a run. Devin Ivany also walked, plating the tying run, and a wild pitch scored Bernadina to put Savannah in front, 3-2.
Edgardo Baez struck out, but Delgado walked Steve Mortimer and threw another wild pitch that made it 4-2. Delgado also walked Ofilio Castro before Kyle Jackson came out of the bullpen and retired Trey Webb on a flyout to end the inning.
Galvez went 2 1/3 innings and gave up two runs with a walk and a strikeout. Delgado retired one batter, was charged with two runs on four walks and took the loss. Jackson finished up, walking three and striking out five in 3 1/3 innings.
"I can honestly say I have never seen that in my entire life," Sand Gnats manager Randy Knorr told the Savannah Morning News. "It was just one of those days for (Delgado). If you ask one of (Greenville's) staff or players, I'm sure they would say he's never done that."
Savannah got a combined seven-hitter from Steven Cook and Brett Campbell.
