Padres Announce Missions 2010 Staff
SAN ANTONIO - The San Diego Padres announced today that Doug Dascenzo will be the new San Antonio Missions Manager for the 2010 season. Joining Dascenzo on the field staff will be Hitting Coach Max Venable, Pitching Coach Glenn Abbott and Athletic Trainer JoJo Tarantino.
Doug Dascenzo joins the Missions after three season as the manager of the Fort Wayne Tin Caps, the Single-A Affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Dacsenzo led the Tin Caps in 2009 to their first ever Midwest League Championship and Minor League best regular season record of 94-46. Dascenzo was honored as co-Manager of the year for the Midwest League in 2009. His overall record in his three seasons at Fort Wayne was 220-199 (.525). Doug made his managerial debut in 2006 for the Eugene Emeralds, Short Season-A Affiliate of the San Diego Padres.
Dascenzo was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 12th round of the 1985 draft out of Oklahoma State University. Doug played parts of seven seasons in the Majors with the Chicago Cubs (1988-1992), Texas Rangers (1993) and the San Diego Padres (1996). He began his Major League career by playing in a then-National League record 241 consecutive games with out making an error. Doug began coaching in the San Diego farm system in 1999 as an outfield/base running instructor and held that position for seven years before beginning his managerial career. Doug and his wife Patricia reside in Uniontown, PA and have four children.
Taking over the reigns as the Missions new Hitting Coach in 2010 will be Max Venable. Max, the father of former Missions OF Will Venable (2007 Texas League Post-Season All-Star), will be in his sixth season as a Minor League Hitting Coach in the Padres system. He has spent the past two seasons as the Hitting Coach for the Portland Beavers, the Triple-A Affiliate for the San Diego Padres.
Max was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 3rd round of the 1976 draft. He played parts of 12 Major League seasons as an outfielder with the San Francisco Giants (1979-1983), Montreal (1984), Cincinnati (1985-1987) and California (1989-1991). Max and his wife Molly reside in San Rafael, CA they have three children. Max's son Will is currently playing OF for the San Diego Padres and his son Winston is the starting safety for the Boise State Broncos Football team.
Former Missions Pitching Coach, Glenn Abbott, will be back to manage the Missions pitching staff in 2010. Abbott was the Missions pitching coach for the 2007 Texas League Championship team. Abbott is in his fifth season in the Padres organization as he spent last two seasons as the pitching coach for the Portland Beavers, the Triple-A Affiliate for the San Diego Padres.
Glenn pitched 11 seasons in his Major League career with Oakland (1973-76), Seattle (1977-83) and Detroit (1983-84). Abbott participated in the Major League's first four-pitcher no-hitter on September 28, 1975, as he combined with Vida Blue, Paul Linbald and Rollie Fingers to no hit the Angels. Abbott and his wife Patti live in North Little Rock, AR and have three children.
The only returning member of the 2009 field staff with the Missions will be Athletic Trainer JoJo Tarantino. The San Diego State grad spent the 2006-2008 seasons in Fort Wayne. Tarantino has worked his way through the ranks with the San Diego Padres starting as a batboy in San Diego in 1995. After graduating from San Diego State in 2003 Tarantino joined the Athletic Training staff.
