Martinez, Fuller among SAL All-Stars

BlueClaws' Singleton named league's best MLB prospect
September 1, 2010
Astros prospect J.D. Martinez capped his second season with an MVP award on Wednesday when the Class A South Atlantic League unveiled it's 2010 postseason All-Star roster.

Martinez, currently at Double-A Corpus Christi, was honored for his huge season with Lexington, where he hit .362 with 15 homers and 64 RBIs in 88 games. The 2009 20th-round pick was a midseason All-Star and was named the Sally League's Player of the Week on July 12.

The outfielder's season included several memorable moments. He homered in his second start April 9, plated four runs April 22, went 5-for-6 on April 27, owned a 13-game hitting streak from May 30-June 14, homered in three straight games May 26-28 and enjoyed his biggest performance July 8 with five hits, two homers and six RBIs. He went deep five times in his final seven games before joining Corpus Christi on July 16.

Mets prospect and Savannah Sand Gnat James Fuller was selected as the league's Most Outstanding Pitcher after going 8-3 with a league-leading 1.93 ERA in 19 games.

Phillies first baseman Jonathan Singleton, of Lakewood, was named the Most Outstanding Major League Prospect after batting .297 with 107 hits, 14 homers and 73 RBIs in 98 games.

BlueClaws skipper Mark Parent was selected as Manager of the Year after guiding Lakewood to a first-half Northern Division crown and 79 total wins, the most in the league this season. Savannah's Marc Valdes made the team as a coach after helping the Sand Gnats claim the Southern Division's first-half title.

Asheville's Jared Clark joined Singleton at first base. Lexington's Jose Altuve (2B), Lakewood's Jonathan Villar (SS), Augusta's Christopher Dominguez (3B) and Charleston's Robert Lyerly (utility) were named All-Star infielders.

Asheville's Eliezer Mesa, Greenville's Jeremy Hazelbaker and Hagerstown's Destin Hood joined Martinez as All-Star outfielders. The Sun's Justin Bloxom was voted in at designated hitter.

Augusta's Jorge Bucardo, who went 9-4 with a 2.21 ERA before his promotion, was selected as the league's top right-hander.

The All-Star Team was voted on by field managers, general managers, local beat writers and broadcasters.
