Pineiro, Quakes tie Cal semifinals
Pineiro took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in a rehab start Sunday as the Quakes beat the Lake Elsinore Storm, 7-5, to tie the best-of-5 series at 1-1.
One night after Chris Young was dominant in a rehab start for the Storm, Pineiro (1-0) did not allow a hit until Jesus Lopez doubled leading off the sixth. Working his way back from a strained oblique muscle, the 31-year-old right-hander was charged with two runs on three hits with three strikeouts over six frames.
Pineiro, a veteran of two Major League postseason outings, is 10-7 with a 4.18 ERA in 20 starts for the Angels this years.
Darwin Perez went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs, while former first-round pick Mike Trout also collected three hits, stole a base and scored a run for the Quakes. Dillon Baird doubled twice and Angel Castillo scored a pair of runs.
Chris Scholl fanned three over two innings of hitless relief before Eddie McKiernan surrendered three runs on two hits in the ninth for Rancho Cucamonga, which hosts Game 3 on Monday.
Juan Oramas (0-1) gave up three runs on eight hits while striking out three over five innings for the Storm. Nick Vincent, who hadn't allowed a run since Aug. 3, gave up three in the ninth.
Lopez was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Storm, who totaled four hits. Brad Chalk delivered an RBI double and scored a run, while Cal League All-Star Cole Figueroa contributed a sacrifice fly.
