Bowling Green, Ky.-Cameron Seitzer's two-run double keyed a three-run sixth inning as the Bowling Green Hot Rods defeated the Dayton Dragons 4-1 on Wednesday night in the first game of a three-game set. The Dragons dropped to 14-26 with the loss while Bowling Green improved to 22-18.
Dayton broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the sixth inning to take a brief lead. Juan Perez singled to start the inning and with two outs, raced around to third on a wild pick-off throw. Steve Selsky singled to center to bring in Perez and give Dayton a 1-0 lead.
But Bowling Green answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth against Dragons reliever Mike Dennhardt (0-1). With two on and one out, Seitzer doubled to the left field corner to drive in both runners and give Bowling Green a 2-1 lead. Seitzer scored on Josh Sale's single to center to make it 3-1. The Hot Rods scored an unearned run in the eighth to close out the scoring.
The Dragons finished with six hits. Perez was 2 for 4 with a single and a triple to lead the attack. The Dragons struggled with runners in scoring position, going 1 for 12 as a team in those situations. Twice in the game, a Dragons batter led off an inning with a triple but was stranded at third base.
The Dragons meet the Hot Rods again on Thursday at 7:35 p.m. EDT (WONE 980 AM Radio). Jacob Johnson, who made 25 starts for the Dragons in 2010 (8-7, 4.47) but missed the entire 2011 season with a shoulder injury, will start for Dayton in his first official game appearance in nearly 21 months. Bowling Green will counter with Jake Floethe (5-1, 3.27). The next home game is Saturday against Great Lakes at 7:05 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.
