Harold Riggins Takes SAL Miller High Life Home Run Derby Title
The derby took place just before the start of the 53rd Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game on Tuesday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The game was presented by General Dynamics Land Systems - Force Protection Industries and the Charleston Restaurant Association.
Starting things was third baseman Matt Skole of the Hagerstown Suns and he managed one dinger during his time at-bat. Duffy was next and could only match Skole's total with one long ball. Hitting third was Riggins, and he jumped into the lead with two ropes over the left field wall, guaranteeing himself a spot in the finals. The fourth and final hitter was outfielder Travis Taijeron of the Savannah Sand Gnats, who was unable to find his stroke and went homerless.
To determine Riggins' opponent in the final, Skole and Duffy squared off in a tiebreaker. Skole batted first and took four pitches to hit it out, yet Duffy did one better as he homered on his third swing to set up a faceoff with Riggins for the SAL Miller High Life Home Run Derby Championship.
In the championship round, Riggins got locked in and drilled three long home runs and gave Duffy a hard act to follow. Despite a valiant effort, the Lexington slugger couldn't catch up, and Riggins was crowned the champion for 2012.
