Right-handed pitcher David Hernandez was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 16th round of the 2005 First Year Player Draft. He made his debut with the Baysox in 2008, where he played the whole season in Bowie and also returned for brief stints in 2009 and 2010.

In his career with the Baysox, Hernandez was 10-4 with a 2.63 ERA over 147 innings. In 2008, Hernandez started 27 games for the Baysox and struck out 166 batters while walking only 71 as he was named to the Eastern League All-Star game. His 166 strikeouts are the second-highest total for a season in Baysox history.

Hernandez made his Major League debut with the Orioles on May 28, 2009. Between 2009 and 2010, Hernandez went 12-18 with a 4.93 ERA in 61 games (27 starts) with the Orioles. In 180.2 innings, he recorded 140 strikeouts compared to 88 walks.

In December 2010, Hernandez along with former Baysox pitcher Kam Mickolio, were traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for third baseman Mark Reynolds. In 2011, Hernandez pitched in 74 games for the Diamondbacks and went 5-3 with a 3.38 ERA and 11 saves in 69.1 innings.
