Where Are They Now: Joel Guzman

The Baysox 20th season at Prince George's Stadium is just around the corner. During the past 19 years, hundreds of players have come through Bowie - some have stopped in for just a few weeks and others have been here for years before moving on with their careers. During the offseason, check back to baysox.com to find out where some of those players are now.

Infielder Joel Guzman was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 2001. At the conclusion of the 2004 season, he was named the Dodgers Minor League Player of the Year after hitting a combined .297 with 33 doubles, 23 home runs, 86 RBI in 133 games between Advanced-A Vero Beach and Double-A Jacksonville. He was also honored by Baseball America as the top prospect in the Florida State League and the number two prospect in the Southern League.

Entering the 2005, Guzman was named the top Minor League prospect among shortstops and the top prospect in the Dodgers' organization by Baseball America. He went on to lead Jacksonville to the Southern League Championship. Guzman made his Major League debut in June 2006 with the Dodgers before being traded to the Tampa Bay Rays organization in July. He appeared in a total of 24 Major League games with the Dodgers and Rays from 2006-07 and he batted .232 with seven RBI.

After becoming a free agent at the end of the 2008 season, Guzman signed with the Washington Nationals organization. He spent the majority of the 2009 season with the Double-A Harrisburg Senators where he recorded the last five-hit game by a Baysox opponent in July.

Guzman clearly impressed the Orioles during his season with Harrisburg because he joined the Baysox for the 2010 season and had one of the most impressive offensive seasons in franchise history. He led the Eastern League and tied the Baysox single-season franchise home run record with 33 and also led the team in RBI (98) and runs scored (87).

His Baysox dominance was short-lived however as he became a free agent at the end of the season and chose to spend the 2011 season playing professionally in Japan with the Chunichi Dragons. He returned to the United States for the 2012 season and started the year with the Cincinnati Red Double-A affiliate in Pensacola. In 65 games he batted .263 with seven home runs and 35 RBI. He was released in June and signed with the Laguna Vaqueros of the Mexican League where he appeared in 22 games.
