Where Are They Now: Cole McCurry

March 5, 2013

The Baysox 20th season at Prince George's Stadium is just around the corner. During the past 19 years, hundreds of players have come through Bowie - some have stopped in for just a few weeks and others have been here for years before moving on with their careers. During the offseason, check back to baysox.com to find out where some of those players are now.

Left-handed pitcher Cole McCurry was drafted by the Orioles in the 43rd round of the 2007 First Year Player Draft out of Tennessee Wesleyan College. He began his professional career as a starting pitcher with the Gulf Coast Orioles, going 6-5 with a 3.07 ERA in 15 games (10 starts) in 2007.

After pitching in Aberdeen and Delmarva in 2008 and 2009, McCurry was promoted to Advanced-A Frederick in 2010. While he had spent his entire career up to that point as a starter, he struggled and was moved to the bullpen halfway through the season. He experienced some success coming out of the bullpen, going 3-3 with a 3.40 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 18 games after having an ERA above 4.50 in 12 games as a starter.

Early in the 2011 season, McCurry was promoted to Bowie where he was one of the most reliable members of the bullpen for the first half of the season. He went 4-0 with a 0.80 ERA in 15 games and 33.2 innings. During that time, he struck out 44 batters and allowed just three earned runs. McCurry finished the year with Triple-A Norfolk.

McCurry started this past season back in the starting rotation for the Baysox, but he struggled in his 11 games before making a quick stop in Norfolk and then being traded to the Atlanta Braves. The Braves had originally drafted McCurry out of Surry Community College in North Carolina in 2005, but he chose to attend Tennessee Wesleyan instead. McCurry spent most of the rest of the season with Triple-A Gwinnett, where he went 1-2 with a 4.88 ERA in 17 games out of the bullpen.
