Where Are They Now: Joe Mahoney

March 12, 2013

The Baysox 20th season at Prince George's Stadium is just around the corner. During the past 19 years, hundreds of players have come through Bowie - some have stopped in for just a few weeks and others have been here for years before moving on with their careers. During the offseason, check back to baysox.com to find out where some of those players are now.

First baseman Joe Mahoney was drafted by the Orioles in the sixth round of the 2007 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Richmond. He started slow in Aberdeen, but was a force during the second half of the 2007 season, finishing with nine home runs and 44 RBI.

Mahoney was promoted to Delmarva in 2008 and he spent most of the next two seasons there, showing off his dynamic speed with 29 stolen bases in 2009. He had a breakout 2010 season, hitting .307 in a combined 124 games between Frederick and Bowie. After being named the Orioles Player of the Month in June, Mahoney was named the Brooks Robinson Orioles Minor League Player of the Year at the end of the season.

Entering the 2011 season, there were high expectations for Mahoney, but numerous injuries limited him to 85 games with the Baysox. Despite starting the season slow, Mahoney finished with a team-high 67 RBI and was one of the best hitters in the Eastern League after the All-Star break.

In 2012, Mahoney was promoted to Norfolk where he spent most of the season. After the Orioles were struck with a number of injuries, Mahoney was able to make his Major League debut July 7, 2012. He played in two games with the Orioles and hit .265 in 132 games with the Tides.

At the end of the season, Mahoney was claimed off waivers by the Florida Marlins. His power has made headlines in Spring Training and he is a candidate to open the season as the Marlins' first baseman. You can read more about Mahoney's Spring Training success on MLB.com.
