Black Named April Player of the Month

Reliever Posted Third-Most Saves in the IL and a 2.93 ERA
May 11, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS -- Relief pitcher Vic Black has been named the Indianapolis Indians' Player of the Month for April. He will accept the award - a custom-made watch courtesy of Windsor Jewelry - before tonight's home contest against the Toledo Mud Hens.

Black was one of the most consistent arms out of the Tribe's bullpen in April, converting six of seven save opportunities while posting a 2.93 ERA (5 ER in 15.1 IP), 1.04 WHIP and 24 strikeouts to just seven walks. The right-hander's six saves were the third most in the International League during the month, and his 11 appearances were tied for second among all IL hurlers as well.

After surrendering three earned runs in his first outing, Black rebounded to not allow more than one earned run in any of his final 10 appearances, including delivering eight scoreless efforts en route to a stellar 1.29 ERA (2 ER in 14.0 IP) through the remainder of the month. In his closing role, the Indianapolis hurler held opposing batters to a miniscule .170 batting average (9-for-53) with no home runs through 15.1 frames of work.

As of May 10, Black is 0-2 with the second-most saves in the IL (9), a 2.84 ERA (6 ER in 19.0 IP), 29 strikeouts and just 10 walks. The right-hander has also successfully converted each of his last six save opportunities from April 21 - May 9.
