Angels reacquire southpaw Skaggs

The Angels bolstered their pitching staff Tuesday, sending slugger Mark Trumbo to Arizona in a three-way deal that netted White Sox hurler Hector Santiago and left-hander Tyler Skaggs from the D-backs.

This will be Skaggs' second go-round with the Angels. The D-backs initially acquired him from the Angels in July 2010 in a deal that included right-hander Dan Haren.

Skaggs, a first-round pick (40th overall) out of Santa Monica High School in 2009, began the 2013 campaign as Arizona's top prospect -- he was ranked No. 10 in the Minors -- after posting a 2.87 ERA in 22 starts for Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno in 2012.

The southpaw, who turned 22 in July, had less success in 2013. Skaggs went 6-10 with a 4.59 ERA in 19 outings (17 starts) for Reno, striking out 115 batters in 109 2/3 frames.

Skaggs was also roughed up in seven Major League starts, going 2-3 with a 5.12 mark. Though his strikeout numbers were strong -- 36 in 38 2/3 innings -- Skaggs surrendered seven home runs in his big league outings while allowing just five all season in the Minors.

The Angels ranked 11th in the 15-team American League in staff ERA last season despite pitching in one the AL's most pitcher-friendly parks.

The D-backs will also receive two players to be named later (one from each of the White Sox and Angels) or cash as part of the deal.
