Sizzling Seager racks up four more hits

Top Dodgers prospect extends his streak to nine games for Quakes
May 23, 2014

Corey Seager's April was solid, but his May has been downright sensational.

The Dodgers' top prospect extended his hitting streak to nine games, going 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI, as Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga held off Inland Empire, 6-4, on Thursday night.

Seager's four-hit night -- his second in his last five games -- lifted his average to .368 through 39 games this season, the best in the California League. The former 18th-overall pick was batting .320 at the start of the run and boasts hits in 22 of his last 24 games.

Rancho Cucamonga erased an early deficit on Robbie Garvey's three-run homer in the second inning and an RBI single by Pratt Maynard in the third. Seager, who singled in the first and doubled two batters after Garvey's blast in the third, added a single in the sixth and an RBI single in the eighth. The 20-year-old swiped second base but was left aboard in scoring position.

Over the course of his nine-game streak, Seager is batting an eyebrow-raising .526 (20-for-38) with seven doubles, three home runs and 12 RBIs. Thursday night's steal was his first of the streak and sixth of the season.

In addition to leading the Cal League in average, Seager paces the circuit in doubles (18), ranks second in slugging percentage at .595 and checks in third with 25 extra-base hits and 97 total bases.

From the leadoff spot, Garvey helped to spark the Quakes at the plate. On a 3-for-4 night, Garvey tripled, homered, drove in four runs and scored twice.

Rancho Cucamonga starter Jharel Cotton exited the game one out shy of completing the fifth inning. Freddie Cabrera (1-1) picked up the win, allowing one run on two hits while striking out one and not walking a batter over 1 1/3 frames. Blake Smith earned his sixth save by striking out one in a perfect ninth.

Inland Empire starter Greg Billo (0-2) was charged with four runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking three in three innings.
