Burgamy outshines rehabbing Swisher

Minor League vet homers twice, plates seven runs in B-Mets' victory
June 12, 2014

The big presence at Canal Park on Wednesday night was supposed to be Nick Swisher. Brian Burgamy had other ideas.

Burgamy socked two homers and collected seven RBIs during a 3-for-4 performance, powering Double-A Binghamton to a 12-6 win over Akron.

His fireworks overshadowed Swisher, the rehabbing Indians first baseman/outfielder who went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. He's been on the disabled list with a hyperextended knee since May 27 and was 0-for-2 in his first rehab game on Tuesday.

Burgamy entered the game in a 4-for-27 funk, but the three-hit night boosted his average to .235 in 49 Eastern League contests.

The 32-year-old second baseman and veteran of 13 years of pro ball -- six in independent leagues -- also hit two homers and drove in seven runs for Campeche in the Mexican League last July 25. His domestic high is five RBIs for short-season Eugene on Aug. 3, 2002.

Burgamy, a switch-hitter, batted from the left side all night, with all three of his hits going to center field. In the top of the first, he lined a single up the middle off RubberDucks starter Toru Murata. An inning later, he hammered Murata's first pitch over the fence for a three-run blast.

After flying out in the fourth, Burgamy connected on another three-run homer in the sixth, this one on the second pitch he saw from Enosil Tejeda.

Batting with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, Burgamy fouled off the first offering from Louis Head, then took four straight pitches to plate his seventh run.

Sixth-ranked Mets prospect Kevin Plawecki singled, walked and plated a run for Binghamton. He's tied for fourth in the league with a .342 average.

Akron got a hit, a walk and a run scored from MLB.com's No. 9 overall prospect, Francisco Lindor, while Indians No. 10 prospect Joe Wendle was 3-for-5.
