PawSox Are the Champs AGAIN

September 13, 2014

(Durham, NC) - For the second time in three years, the Pawtucket Red Sox are Governors' Cup Champions after a 4-1 victory Saturday night before 3,261 fans at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. It's the PawSox fourth Championship in franchise history.

Pawtucket turned to Keith Couch, who spent the entire season in Double-A Portland, for Game Five and he did not disappoint. The righty fired 6.2 shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out four.

Miguel Celestino threw the final 2.1 innings allowing just a solo homer in the 9th inning to earn his first post season save.

As they have the entire series, the PawSox plated the game's first run. Ivan De Jesus singled with one out before Ryan Lavarnway singled and Bryce Brentz doubled to give Pawtucket a 1-0 lead.

Pawtucket added another run in the 3rd when Rusney Castillo doubled, stole third and scored on a De Jesus sacrifice fly making it 2-0.

Ryan Lavarnway leading off the 5th crushed a solo homer (1) to left center to put the PawSox in front 3-0.

Durham starter, Merrill Kelly, who clinched the Governors' Cup for the Bulls in 2013, went just five innings allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out seven.

Ryan Lavarnway was awarded the Governors' Cup Most Valuable Player after he went 10-for-22 with a home run, two doubles and three RBI in the series.

Radio coverage of the Gildan National Championship Game between Pawtucket and the winner of the Pacific Coast League will begin at 6:30pm with the game scheduled for 7:00 on 920 AM (WHJJ). The game will also be televised on the NBC Sports Network.
