Bisons turn triple play in rout of Indians

Wolf, Buffalo extinguish potential Indianapolis rally in fifth inning
June 2, 2015

Buffalo was in a jam and Indianapolis hoped putting runners in motion would spark a mid-inning rally. Instead, the Blue Jays affiliate got out of a tight spot with one swing of the bat.

Left-hander Randy Wolf, second baseman Ramon Santiago and first baseman Daric Barton combined to turn the International League's first triple play in three years and the Triple-A Bisons rolled up 17 hits in a 12-3 win over the Indians on Monday at Victory Field.

Wolf gave up a leadoff single to Jaff Decker start off the bottom of the fifth and Mel Rojas Jr. followed by reaching on a fielding error by third baseman Matt Hague.

Pedro Florimon, who tripled to left field in his previous at-bat, promptly followed with a line drive back to the mound with both runners moving on the full-count offering. Wolf caught it, spun and threw to Santiago at second base to retire Decker, and Santiago's throw to first cut down Rojas.

Every member of Buffalo's starting lineup had at last one hit. Dalton Pompey had three RBIs, Barton scored three times and Hague amassed three hits.

Indianapolis was also victimized by the league's last triple play in 2012. On May 16 of that year, Chase d'Arnaud bunted into the inning-ending play in the eighth inning of an eventual 1-0 loss at Lehigh Valley.

Veteran left-hander Wolf (4-1) continued his strong work in the International League, allowing two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits while striking out three and walking one in 5 1/3 innings.
