Reports: Harvey to undergo Tommy John

Orioles top prospect has made five appearances since 2014 campaign
July 21, 2016

The injuries keep coming for Hunter Harvey.

According to multiple reports, the Orioles' top prospect will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right pitching elbow, a procedure that will end his 2016 season and likely cost him most of the 2017 campaign as well. The 21-year-old right-hander will have the surgery next Tuesday with Dr. Donald D'Alessandro in Charlotte, North Carolina, per reports.

This setback is just the latest in a string of health issues for Harvey.

The 22nd overall pick in the 2013 Draft out of a North Carolina high school, Harvey made 17 starts in his first full season and posted a 3.18 ERA with 106 strikeouts in 87 2/3 innings for Class A Delmarva before being shut down in July due to a right elbow strain. He did not pitch in any Minor League games in 2015 due to concerns over the elbow. While trying to come back this spring, he suffered a groin strain and underwent hernia surgery in early May.

Harvey, the son of former Major Leaguer Bryan Harvey, finally made his 2016 season debut on June 25 in the Gulf Coast League. After two starts at the complex level, the 6-foot-3 hurler moved up to Class A Short Season Aberdeen. He exited in the second inning of his third start for the IronBirds with soreness in his right flexor mass last Saturday, a malady that reportedly led him to see Dr. James Andrews.

When healthy, Harvey had shown promise with two plus pitches in his fastball and curve and an average changeup. He is ranked as the game's No. 73 overall prospect by MLB.com but is likely to be bumped from the top 100 in the coming midseason update, given the injury concerns.
