It's 'Show' time for Braves' Swanson

The future is now for the Braves.

The club's No. 1 prospect, Dansby Swanson, will be brought up Wednesday to make his Major League debut after Atlanta traded away veteran shortstop Erick Aybar on Tuesday. Swanson will make the jump from Double-A Mississippi, leapfrogging Triple-A entirely.

MLB.com's fifth overall prospect will take Aybar's spot at short for Wednesday's game against the Twins.

"There's a lot we like about Dansby," Braves president of baseball operations John Hart told MLB.com. "We don't expect him to come up here and be the savior, but we feel like this is an opportunity for us to take a good look and get him some experience up here in the big leagues."

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Swanson started the season with Class A Advanced Carolina, but was bumped up after posting a .333/.441/.526 slash line in 21 games with the Mudcats. In 84 contests with Mississippi, the 22-year-old produced a .261/.342/.402 slash line with eight home runs, six stolen bases and 54 runs scored.

Swanson reached base safely in eight straight games in August and 16 of his last 17. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Vanderbilt product's advanced approach at the plate was one of the qualities that enabled Swanson to be drafted at the top of his class, and he's drawn 64 walks in 127 career Minor League games. His defensive prowess makes it likely he'll stick at shortstop long-term.

"This is a very smart kid, and he's a good player," Hart said. "And however he performs up here, I think it's going to do nothing but be beneficial for him and for us as we go to make a decision as to what we do with the shortstop position next year."

Swanson landed in Atlanta after the D-backs packaged him with right-hander Aaron Blair and outfielder Ender Inciarte in a deal for for righty Shelby Miller and reliever Gabe Speier. Miller entered the 2016 season with a 3.22 ERA in 96 career Major League starts, but the 25-year-old went 2-9 with a 7.14 ERA in 14 starts with Arizona this season and was sent down to Triple-A Reno on July 14.

The Braves picked up No. 20 Tigers prospect Kade Scivicque in return for Aybar.
