Lancaster, CA - On Wednesday night, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes failed to hold onto a late lead, falling to the Lancaster JetHawks by a final score of 7-6.
With hopes of recorded their second-straight one-run victory over the JetHawks (56-52, 22-18), the Quakes' (64-44, 23-17) bullpen faltered towards the finish line.
After Deacon Liput stirred up the Rancho offense with a solo bomb in the top of the first, Lancaster snatched the lead back with three tallies in the bottom of third, making it 3-1, JetHawks. As for the Liput home run, it was his third blast in as many games.
The first lead of the series for Lancaster lasted a matter of moments, as the Quakes knotted up the score in the top of the fourth via some poor JetHawks' defense.
With the score at 3-3, much like game one, the starting pitchers buckled down for the proceeding several frames. The next runs would not come until Rancho broke through with a pair in the top of the seventh. Starling Heredia's go-ahead ground-rule double and Jeter Downs' tack-on sacrifice fly awarded the Quakes a 5-3 lead.
Jeren Kendall would add a supposed, insurance RBI double in the top of the eighth, giving Rancho a 6-3 advantage. However, Lancaster would score the game's next four runs to force a rubber match on Thursday.
Luke Morgan put on the cape for the JetHawks, capping off a walk-off victory with a two-out RBI single off of Guillermo Zuniga.
Hayden Roberts (3-1) earned the victory, giving up one hit in a scoreless top-of-the-ninth inning.
Zuniga (0-1) took the loss and a blown-save, surrendering two runs in just 0.2 innings.
In the season finale at The Hangar for Rancho, they will call upon RHP Michael Grove (0-4) for the start. Lancaster is set to counter with RHP Will Gaddis (6-7).
Circle the date Tuesday, August 6th, as the Quakes will play their first home game in over a week, taking on the same Lancaster JetHawks for a Healthy RC Recycle Tuesday. Make sure to purchase tickets online at rcquakes.com or by calling (909) 481-5000… Go Quakes!
