The New Orleans Baby Cakes needed 10 innings on Thursday night, but extended their road winning streak to six games with a 5-3 victory over the San Antonio Missions.
New Orleans kept pace with first-place Round Rock in the PCL's American South division, sitting 6½ games back with 19 to play, and inched within five games of the second-place Missions.
San Antonio grabbed a quick 2-0 lead by sending eight batters to the plate in the opening frame against Nick Neidert. Back-to-back singles to open the game were followed by a David Freitas sacrifice fly, and Tyrone Taylor added an RBI single, but Neidert was able to avoid further damage by stranding the bases loaded.
The 'Cakes promptly wrested control in the top of the second, when Austin Dean singled to stretch his hitting streak to 10 games ahead of a walk to Rosell Herrera, and Yadiel Rivera smoked his 12th home run of the year to put New Orleans in front, 3-2.
That is where the score remained for most of the night, as Neidert settled in to limit San Antonio to two hits over the next five innings. In search of a third consecutive win since returning from a three-month stint on the injured list, Neidert exited after making 111 pitches in six innings, scattering two runs and five hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Brian Moran retired all four batters he faced out of the bullpen, but Tyler Stevens gave up a game-tying home run to Taylor in the eighth and the game went to extras.
With placed runner Jesus Sanchez at second base, Magneuris Sierra opened the 10th with a line drive off Missions reliever Angel Perdomo (3-2), who threw wildly past first base to allow Sanchez to score and Sierra to scamper to third. Eddy Alvarez tacked on an insurance run with an RBI double.
Brett Graves (2-0) worked around walks in both the ninth and 10th innings to pick up the victory, incuding a game-ending double play from Taylor to seal the Missions' season-high seventh straight defeat.
Sitting a season-high 12 games above .500, the 'Cakes continue the four-game set in San Antonio on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
