Bats Fall Silent in State College

State College, PA -- Williamsport's offense was unable to back a string start from Kyle Young, as the Crosscutters fell 2-0 to the State College Spikes on the road.

State College, PA -- Williamsport's offense was unable to back a string start from Kyle Young, as the Crosscutters fell 2-0 to the State College Spikes on the road.

In what was a pitcher duel in the making on paper, lived up to the billing as both starters were able to keep the opposing offenses off balance for a majority of the ballgame.
Cole Stobbe was able to reach with a first inning single, extending his hitting streak to six-straight games. Stobbe was picked off by Andrew Summerville, erasing the Cutters 1st inning base runner.
State College was able to strike first against Kyle Young, using a lead off bunt single from Edwin Figuera to set the stage. Figuera took 2nd base on a wild pitch and then advanced to 3rd on a ground out.
Bryce Denton plated Figuera with a sacrifice fly to right field, but not for a lack of effort from Yahir Gurrola who delivered a strike to home plate, just late, giving the Spikes a 1-0 lead.
State College was able to add a second run against Kyle Young in the bottom of the 6th, getting a RBI single from Yariel Gonzalez to score Bryce Denton.
Young was relieved by Zach Warren after the single, having allowed two runs, both earned, over 5.2 innings. The southpaw allowed five hits and one walk while striking out four batters. 
Andrew Summerville was lights out, retiring the side in five of his seven innings of work, including retiring 19 straight batters before being relieved by Robbie Gordon in the top of the 8th inning.
Summerville held the Crosscutters scoreless, allowing just a base hit and allowing two walks while striking out seven batters as he improved to 4-0 on the year, lowering his ERA to 1.63 on the season.
Zach Warren was solid in relief, tossing 2.1 innings of shutout work. The lefty allowed two hits and struck out a pair of batters while not allowing a walk.
Robbie Gordon tossed a pair of scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out four as he earned his 2nd save of the season.
The Crosscutters continue their three-game series against the Spikes in State College tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. At Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Cutter Carvings - It was the fourth time that the Crosscutters have been shutout this season and the 2nd time the Crosscutters were shutout by the Spikes... Williamsport fell to 11-18 on the road... The Crosscutters were retired in order in six of the nine innings...
