This week’s image has a military theme. Like many of you, I spent some time reflecting on Memorial Day this past weekend. Interestingly, I’ve never photographed a Memorial Day weekend game in Reno. It’s the one big gap in my archive. My time as the Aces team photographer coincides with my years photographing Bishop’s Mule Days Celebration in California.

Mule Days is like a rodeo with mules and donkeys. On Saturday, there is a parade through the heart of town. On Sunday’s there’s a big Memorial Day tribute to members of the armed services that died while serving.

It’s a wonderful weekend full of blue skies, beautiful animals and Americana. I love Bishop and it’s become a tradition to spend my holiday in the Eastern Sierra.

Baseball is a pastime built on tradition and Americana as well. And at Greater Nevada Field, we spend a lot of time honoring service members, veterans and first responders. Over the years, I’ve made a lot of great flag photos. And I’ll probably post some of those soon. But for this Memorial Day-inspired post, I wanted to share a flagless image.

This photo was taken on June 6, 2016. It’s from a pregame ceremony with members of the Nevada National Guard.

I’m drawn to the boots at the top of the frame and appreciate the symbolism. Sometimes, the most interesting images exclude the obvious and focus instead on smaller, storytelling details.
