‘Caps Drop Series Opener

COMSTOCK PARK, MI – The West Michigan Whitecaps lost a lead in the late innings as part of a 6-2 loss to the Fort Wayne TinCaps in a back-and-forth matchup Tuesday night at LMCU Ballpark.

It was a strong night on the mound for the Tigers minor league pitcher of the month in June, as Brendan White tossed six innings while allowing two runs and striking out five. The 'Caps failed to capitalize, going 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position in the loss.

The Whitecaps scored first in the fifth inning as Rey Rivera blasted a solo home run to put West Michigan out in front 1-0. Fort Wayne responded with a two-run homer off the bat of Justin Lopez in the sixth before Daniel Cabrera tied the game with an RBI-single in the bottom half, 2-2. Fort Wayne added individual runs in the seventh and eighth before plating a pair in the ninth to put the finishing touches on a 6-2 victory.

Fort Wayne reliever Sam Williams (2-2) tossed two innings, allowing one run on a pair of hits in his second victory this season. Bryce Tassin (1-5) lasted only an inning allowing one run on one hit as he suffered his fifth loss of 2021. Whitecaps infielder Wenceel Perez extends his multi-hit streak to five games 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Parker Meadows extended his streak to a season-high six games. The TinCaps improve to 27-33 as the Whitecaps fall to 27-32. Lopez led Fort Wayne with a three-hit performane including the home run in the victory.
