De Los Santos fans nine but Power falls 9-0

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (July 9, 2019) - Josias De Los Santos fanned nine batters and tossed his second career quality start, but West Virginia was held to two hits by the Delmarva Shorebirds, 9-0, Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park.
De Los Santos (1-6) set the tone in the first inning, as he worked an easy one-two-three frame on just nine pitches. Julio Rodriguez doubled in the bottom of the inning for the Power's first hit, but ultimately West Virginia (9-10, 46-43) was shut down by Ryan Wilson (4-3) when he struck out Jake Anchia to end the first.

The two starters continued to exchange scoreless innings and did so with the help of the strikeout throughout the night. At the end of the fourth, De Los Santos had not allowed a run and already surpassed his previous career-high with seven strikeouts. Wilson countered with six strikeouts in the first four innings while surrendering just a pair of hits to West Virginia.
De Los Santos ran into trouble in the fifth, as he conceded three runs on three hits that gave the Shorebirds (14-5, 62-26) a 3-0 lead. Wilson seemed to gain more confidence with the new lead, as he then rattled off a streak of ten straight hitters retired to end his dominant seven innings of work. West Virginia allowed De Los Santos to weave his way through the sixth, where he finished his outing with a three-up, three-down inning and capped his strikeout total at nine. 
Sal Biasi entered in the seventh and gave up a run on a pair of Delmarva hits and an RBI groundout from Jaylen Ferguson that thrust the Shorebirds ahead 4-0. Wilson finished his outing in the bottom of the inning with a career-best 11 strikeouts.
Delmarva tacked on five more runs in the top of the ninth inning against Elias Espino that included a Ben Breazeale solo homer and four unearned runs. The rally pushed the Shorebirds ahead 9-0 and allowed for Felix Bautista to shut the door with two hitless innings of relief and three punchouts. Delmarva set down the final 16 hitters they faced in order.
The Power continues their three-game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds Wednesday night at Appalachian Power Park, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. RHP Clay Chandler (7-4, 3.87 ERA) heads to the hill for West Virginia, while Delmarva sends RHP Hector Guance (6-3, 3.74 ERA) to the bump.
