D-backs' third-round pick Railey suspended

Arizona Minor League outfielder banned 50 games for amphetamine
February 23, 2015

Matt Railey, the D-backs' third-round pick in last year's Draft, was suspended for 50 games Monday after testing positive for a banned substance.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball said Railey received a 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for an amphetamine, a stimulant in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension will be effective at the start of the 2015 Pioneer League season in June.

Railey, 19, was the No. 89 overall pick in last summer's Draft out of North Florida Christian High School in Tallahassee, Florida, where he led the school to a state title. Ranked as Arizona's No. 20 prospect at the end of 2014, Railey appeared in 13 games last year, debuting on June 16 with Rookie-level Missoula and hitting .267 with two homers, seven RBIs, seven runs scored and a stolen base in 45 at-bats for the Osprey.

As a high school senior, the Florida native hit .407 (35-for-86) with four home runs and 10 doubles.

"[He] gives us a chance to add a left-handed bat with kind of a hit-speed combo," D-backs scouting director Ray Montgomery said of Railey on Day 2 of last year's Draft.

Major League Baseball has suspended 39 players this year for violating the Minor League drug program.
